Comics and Books

Some weeks back, after a tiring ordeal from the first day of a conference event I organized, I was boarding a cab with my friend Valerie to go from Fort to Makati. As the cab slowly drove along the side of Fully Booked at Bonifacio Highstreet I saw this really fun picture.

I told myself that I need to get a snapshot of this mural the next day to show to a friend of mine who loves Calvin and Hobbes. I wasn't a fan of that comic book but if you check through the photo above, it contained the characters Waldo, Calvin and Hobbes, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Wimpy Kid, and The Little Prince. I've only seen or heard about most of these characters since I've only read the Little Prince.

Thinking back, comics and books became an outlet for our imagination to explore the vast ideas and worlds that authors create. Sometimes people take for granted the amusement that can be gained since some believe that these stories are rubbish dwelling on senseless matters. Some adults have already forgotten the simple joys of reading comics and books since they are preoccupied with the daily work that they are engaged with.

Why don't we start to read more? This cartoon wall of sorts kinda challenged me to reawaken my interest in reading comics and books. Yes it may be time consuming to read through and flip book pages but think of it as an escape from the realities that we have to deal with. Read a comic once in a while. It will be nice to laugh about the simple insights that these short situations bring. Who knows, maybe we can learn something from fictional stories that we can find use in real life.

Stoked Inc.'s 10th Year Anniversary (Recounting Events # 2)

My friend Jia Mendoza invited me to the 10th Year Anniversary of Stoked Inc.

For those unfamiliar with the company, Stoked Inc. is a leading retailer in the country specializing in swimming, surfing, and wake boarding gears and wear. I've always loved looking through their surfing and wake boarding gear while imagining myself trying to do outdoor water sports. Maybe the sports part is not for me but I always check out their cool board shorts.

The event was held at the Rockwell Tent. Booze was free flowing and the people were ready to party. The program included an AVP on the journey of the company and the people who continue to support the brand, with a fashion show on their latest collection after.

It was an amazing journey for this brand and their founder, JV Borromeo.

The mannequins on display had on the current items available in their stores.

The bags in the glass display were complete with the accessories that goes with it.

I had great fun that night and was reunited with one of my many great loves - Absolut.

Bergamo's Jazz Cocktails (Recounting Events # 1)

Bergamo is one of the country's premiere haberdasher specializing both on tailoring and ready to wear. It is one of the most recognizable names in Philippine fashion being the go to store for the casual, corporate, to formal wear of Manila's stylish men. The brand may sound distinctly foreign but the company is actually Filipino owned and has been in the industry for more than 25 years.

I was invited to attend the initial preview of their summer collection at their Greenbelt 5 flagship store. The intimate event entitled "Jazz Cocktails" included a select clientele loyal to the ever changing style of the brand. Guests were serenaded by the spectacular Michael Young on sax, while being served Japanese h'ordeurves and wine.

The first set had a more casual look for the season. The pieces dabbled mostly on neutral colors with variation of details in fabrics, prints and piping. Light materials were used consisting mostly of linen – fitting for the summer season in the country.

The second set had a dash of bright colors, playing with lavender, pink and blue, with knitted suit pieces highlighting a stylish resort to formal look. Fabrics ranged from linen, silk to light wool showcasing a functional collection with an easy feel.

Mr. Mel Meer, owner of Bergamo, featured on the left with the author, proudly unveiling this year’s Spring / Summer collection.

Located at almost every corner of the metro, Bergamo is accessible to its growing clientele offering high quality ready to wear pieces and tailored to perfection suits and barongs. Staying true to innovating men’s fashion, Bergamo continues to succeed in creating modern looks for men.

Special thanks to Mr. Mel Meer and Mr. Louis Dollaga of Bergamo for letting me cover the event.

Details of Me

I always found it a really tough challenge to talk about me. Honest! In some strange way, my voice starts to minimize when I have to describe myself. To help myself express thoughts clearly I always ask, “In what aspect?”

I am Tedrick Yau. I don’t know exactly what my height or weight is – though I don’t think it’s relevant in any way right now. Ambitious and bold, I guess those are my adjectives. My profession deals with communications and public relations, both of which are my forte. As a sideline of sorts, I dwell on fashion as an occasional personal shopper or style consultant to a select few who tolerate and listen to my incessant talk about grooming and style. I’m not the best but I have a sharp instinct in bringing together pieces of clothing to making everything look stylish.

There’s a constant battle in my head to incorporate style in everything. To add to this, I have a quest to highlight the style potentials of men. Style is not just about the looks people see on the runways; it’s how average guys come up with a catchy look and deliver it with style. There are vast avenues that have style potentials and I want to put it on the spotlight.

Creativity and ideas are out there. Finding these and learning from it is what I really wanna do. Through this blog I hope to know more about the diverse styles to share my insights to others. Most importantly, I want to just have fun doing this.

Life may not be perfect, but I’m living it in full style.
